Hydrostatic release units can be fitted to any container packed life raft, from 4 – 100 person capacity, to allow unattended life raft deployment in an emergency. At a usual depth of about four metres, water pressure activates a sharp blade within the device which cuts the strong rope that secures the raft to its cradle or mounting position. The raft will float free to the surface and inflate.

The most popular unit, by CM Hammar, is made of glass-fibre reinforced nylon and requires no service – you simply install a new one every two years and dispose of the old one.

To install the Hammer unit is easy. Yellow end is secured to the manual release, black end is attached to the life-raft’s cradle and the painter line is tied to the red (weak) link.
